Teagan & Shawn braved the crazy bad weather for a trip out to the "Wet Coast" ... a.k.a. the "Snowy Coast" Thankfully, their drive was uneventful! They booked their trip to coincide with a work schedule for Shawn and to see us before we left for our trip. With our changes coming a bit late, they didn't have time to change plans, so they came anyway. We were very glad!! AND...Happy Birthday to Doug on Jan 22nd!!
Just a qick note to update "all" our blog readers! We will be a bit delayed in our departure date. Seems Doug's heart decided to have a litle "blip". Actually called an arrythmia or palpitation We thought it best to get it checked out BEFORE we go. Of course that means waiting around for tests to be done. Northing urgent they tell us, more part of a future maintenance plan. Still, we would rather have to do this here than when we are on the road, right?! He has never had any problems before. Maybe this retirement thing is too hard on him and I will have to send him back to work!! YIKES!!...and yes, it really was fine for him to shovel the snow - I really did help!!
"Best laid plans of mice & men" (...and Doug & Nancy) it would seem. We anticipate, at this time, that we should be on the road by the beginning of March. From what the doctors we have seen have told us, it shouldn't interrupt our plans too much. Like one said, more of a nuisance than anything else.
However, that doesn't mean that I won't be updating this blog. Keep checking for more adventures through Nanaimo as we continue to explore our new home town. We will also use this "extra" time at home to practice up on our small amount of Spanish. Who know, it may even come in handy!! (soon!!)
Another great day here in Nanaimo! Don & Di are here for a weekend visit and we did another, yes, another, 6 km walk around Westwood Lake. Can you tell it's a new "favorite" place? Who knows where our travels will take us on Sunday?!! Stay tuned!
More exploring in our new hometown! What a great walk around Westwood Lake. It is a great 6 km walk, some ups and downs but mostly at lake level. Can't tell you how much we enjoy getting out and exploring things!! The day wasn't exactly sunny, but not bad. Once you are in the trails of this great Pacific Coast rainforest, it doesn't really matter! ......Everyone get out for a walk this weekend, okay??!!
This shows just how big this place is. Above, this is just at the start of our walk and you go all the way around this lake. I think this is a man-made lake. There are a ton of snags in it. At the end of the walk, we did see a sign that said "Cougar spotted in area"!! YIKES!!!
"Cherish"...that is what these stones say.Someone painted them and then dropped them into the lake. There is a butterfly stone before the "S". Pretty neat. that is what we did with our day...cherished it!!
A beautiful day in Nanaimo! We went for a long walk/hike at Pipers Lagoon Park. It is beautiful. Lots of climbing around on the rocks and lots of trails. Super sunny day!! From most spots at this park, you can see the ferries coming and going...
What great friends! Bob & Danna came over for a visit. It is always a great time when we see them! You learn living in a small space just how good of friends you all really are!! Despite the rain, we had lots of laughs, bottles of wine (more than a few...) and some good eats. Thanks for the visit! (even if Coombs was closed for the season!!)
Wow! It's hard to believe that 2012 is here!! We hope that everyone had a great Christmas and New Years with famly & friends, or just themselves. Here's to a GREAT 2012 for all of you!!
The first shots below are some of Doug's co-workers in Dec. 2011 at his "official" send-off. Thanks everyone!!
We busied ourselves with Doug's retirement, getting settled and into "retirement" mode. It hasn't been too hard, that's for sure!! We have managed to put away all the decorations and are beginning to take stock of our travelling requirements. We have not really had time (.....I know, what the heck are we doing??!) to explore Nanaimo. We will likely have to leave the "big" exploring time until after we have returned in May. Here are a few Christmas Day photos for you all!
First, some Christmas Day photos:
Next, Boxing Day. Josh & Kathy came over to visit. Some Christmas toasts and a trip up to Coombs Market! Time goes by so fast whenyou are visiting!
